Crater agate is definitely beautiful! It is characterized by the sharp contrast between the bright red jasper and the hazy black chalcedony. These specimens can be found in Patagonia, Argentina.
Discovered in 1997 in a remote region of Patagonia near to a petrified wood deposit these agates shocked the agate community with their stunning color. Each consist of a smoky black chalcedony with some thin revetment of red jasper and a “pillowy” botryoidal red center of hematite. Crater agate is strongly green-fluorescent due to uranium salts. In two polished sections.
