About a year ago, Candia Merchant’s boyfriend rescued a pit bull named Charlie from an abusive home. And since that day, Charlie has returned the favor by becoming a faithful protector of the new family.
“He went from nowhere to run, no toys, no beds, no treats, no love, to have it all.” Merchant told The Dodo portal. “If Charlie thinks any of us are hurt or even out of his sight, he won’t stop until he can go investigate for himself.”
Charlie has a deep bond with Merchant and his three children, but he is closest to his 14-year-old son Donald. And Charlie proved to be a hero by saving his best friend’s life.
Last month, Donald was in the shed looking for his fishing pole and supplies when a wasp started buzzing around. It didn’t take long for the insect to bite the young man, who is allergic to the stinger.
Charlie was keeping an eye on Donald from the living room window while the rest of the family cleaned the house.
“We didn’t see him get bitten, but [Charlie] did,” Merchant said. “Charlie started running back and forth in panic, barking at the window, shivering, and we could tell there was a reason, since Charlie doesn’t bark much.”
“Charlie knew Donny was in trouble,” she added. “He’s never acted like that before, he sure felt like [Donald] was in trouble and didn’t stop until we noticed and went out to see.”
Merchant went to the window and saw her son lying on the ground, struggling for breath. She ran outside and the pit bull followed her, still barking heavily. Merchant didn’t know Donald was allergic, but she recognized the symptoms as she was also allergic and was able to give him the medicine and take him to the doctor.
Fortunately, Donald recovered quickly, but Charlie wasn’t going to let his favorite person go off on their own again so easily.
“After my son was bitten, Charlie refused to leave his side for almost two weeks,” said Merchant. “He would lie on top of it, sit on it, and follow him everywhere – even to the bathroom.”
Donald and his family couldn’t be more grateful to Charlie and they know that as long as he’s around, they’ll be safe.
“I know if it weren’t for Charlie, Donny would be dead,” said Merchant. “Charlie didn’t stop to get our attention.”
When it comes to Charlie, “good boy” is an understatement.
